HAND-CODED POEMS: Digital poetry for the web
What sets digital poetry apart from print poems digitised for the web? In what ways are creative writing and coding similar? And how do you get started making experimental poems that fizz, buzz and pop across web pages?
In this Zoom workshop, you'll be introduced to the principles of digital poetry, learn some basic coding, and begin work on a web poem that is dynamic and interactive.
The first half of the workshop will step learners through converting a text poem into HTML, and then we'll add some simple CSS styles from a pre-prepared list of goodies. In the second half of the workshop, we’ll look at example poems (from Running Dog, Voiceworks and others) to learn how they’re using HTML and CSS. We'll finish on learning how to use the browser to explore the code, and how to approach finding and adapting template code for our projects.
By the end of this workshop you will be able to:
Analyse the unique elements of digital poetry on the web
Create a basic web-page poem made of HTML and CSS
Investigate independently to explore and experiment with web code
What you need to participate:
Zoom and a reliable Internet connection
This workshop is suitable for:
all experience levels (including beginners to both poetry and digital poetry)
Ticketing:
This workshop will run twice, so please choose the date that suits you.
Tickets are priced on a sliding scale, from concession ($30) to full ($40) to feelin’ flush ($50, i.e. subsidise a concession ticket by choosing to pay a li’l extra).

About your facilitator:
Rory Green (@rorydoinstuff) is a writer, editor and digital media artist with a focus on interactive and computer-generated poetry. Their work has been published in journals including Australian Poetry Anthology, Cordite, Rabbit, Plumwood Mountain and Scum Mag, and at events including BLEED and Freeplay Festival. In 2019 Rory was the inaugural poet-in-residence for the Running Dog Poetry Micro-Residency. Rory has taught digital literature through Express Media’s Toolkits: Digital Storytelling program, as well as workshops for Digital Writers Festival, Queensland Poetry Festival, and the National Young Writers Festival.
