This fun and inclusive workshop led by poet and primary teacher Benjamin Dodds will inspire creativity in writers of any age and experience level. ‘Ekphrastic Poetry for Big Kids’ will give participants the opportunity to rediscover poetry’s childlike joy, emphasising play and discovery as inspiration for new writing.

During ‘Ekphrastic Poetry for Big Kids’, participants will encounter a range of visual artworks, musical pieces and works of poetry. Participants will be lead through generative writing tasks, exploring ekphrasis through fresh takes on form, imagery and perspective; as well as a guided session of constructive peer feedback on participants’ pre-submitted drafted ekphrastic poems.

By the end of this workshop you will have:

  • Written new ekphrastic work through a series of prompts and activities

  • Received constructive feedback on your writing in a welcoming group setting

What you need to participate:

  • Zoom and a reliable Internet connection

  • Draft of a short ekphrastic poem (we’ll email you all the details)

This workshop is suitable for:

  • all poetry experience levels

About your facilitator:

Benjamin Dodds is a Sydney-based poet who grew up in the NSW Riverina. He was shortlisted for the 2021 Red Room Poetry Fellowship and is a poetry reader for Overland Journal. His collection Airplane Baby Banana Blanket (Recent Work Press, 2020) was a 2021 Judith Wright Calanthe Award finalist. His work has appeared in Cordite, Southerly, Meanjin, The Australian, Best Australian Poems 2014 and Best Australian Science Writing 2021, and has been broadcast on Radio National. Benjamin is a proud public school teacher.
